Staff Engineer - Web Fullstack

About the role

Join The Economist Group as a Staff Software Engineer, Web Fullstack to lead the technical design and development of web experiences and supporting services that power video streaming, live events and podcast platforms. You will work across frontend and backend systems, setting technical direction and shaping reliable, scalable solutions that deliver high quality media experiences to a global audience. This is an opportunity to work at the intersection of content, product and platform engineering, guiding the evolution of streaming capabilities, improving user experiences across web products, and leading the modernisation of cloud infrastructure.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the design and evolution of web applications that power video streaming, live events, podcasts and supporting product journeys

• Set technical direction for responsive, accessible, high performance frontends built with React.js, Next.js and modern TypeScript

• Define and guide the architecture of backend services and APIs supporting media delivery, playback configuration and core product features

• Provide technical leadership for HLS and adaptive bitrate streaming, with a focus on reliable playback across devices and network conditions

• Shape streaming workflows, including packaging, CDN integration, live event delivery and operational resilience

• Design and guide the adoption of cloud native solutions on AWS, using services such as S3, Lambda, RDS and container based workloads

• Drive performance improvements across the stack, from Core Web Vitals to backend latency, caching and capacity planning

• Establish strong standards for observability, testing, security and CI/CD across services in production

• Collaborate closely with Product, Design, Editorial and engineering teams, while mentoring engineers and influencing technical direction across squads

About you

• 10+ years of experience in web frontend and backend engineering, including experience operating at Staff or senior technical leadership level

• Deep fullstack experience with JavaScript or TypeScript across frontend and backend systems

• Proven experience designing and building production applications with React.js and Next.js at scale

• Strong experience designing service architectures and RESTful APIs, ideally with Node.js or similar

• Deep understanding of modern web architecture, including SSR, static generation, CDN strategies and distributed systems

• Hands on experience with AWS and cloud native application design at scale

• Strong knowledge of web performance, accessibility, security and scalable system design

• Experience with video streaming technologies, particularly HLS and adaptive bitrate streaming, is highly desirable

• Strong knowledge of CI/CD, containerisation, infrastructure as code and production operations

• Clear communication skills, sound judgement and a record of leading technical decisions through influence
