CNC Programmer / Machinist

About the role

We are looking for an experienced CNC Programmer / Machinist who can both write CNC programs and set up and operate the machines that run them. The role covers the full process: interpreting engineering drawings, creating and optimising programs using CAD/CAM software and manual G-code, then setting up, proving out and running parts on CNC and manual lathes, mills and drilling machines. The successful candidate will combine strong programming skills with hands-on machining ability, an eye for detail and accuracy, and a keen interest in production efficiency and process improvement. They must also have good interpersonal communication skills, physical stamina, sound knowledge of mathematics and mechanics, and respect for safety precautions. This is not a one-person, one-machine role. You must be flexible and willing to work across a range of machines and processes as production requires and be keen to keep learning new skills.

Key responsibilities

• Read and interpret engineering drawings, including tolerances, GD&T and surface finish requirements.

• Write and edit CNC programs using CAD/CAM software and manual G-code.

• Plan machining sequences and select tooling, work-holding, speeds and feeds for each material.

• Simulate and prove out new programs and prepare set-up sheets and tool lists for operators.

• Set up and operate CNC and manual turning, milling and drilling machines, including offsets and tool changes.

• Move between machines and jobs as production priorities change.

• Check parts using micro-meters, verniers, gauges and dial indicators, and keep quality records.

• Improve cycle times, tool life and set-up processes, and eliminate non-value-added activities.

• Carry out routine machine maintenance and follow all safety procedures.

• Support and train machine operators.

About you

• 5+ years' CNC machining experience, including at least 2 years' programming.

• Experience with CAD/CAM software (e.g. Mastercam, Fusion 360) and Fanuc, Siemens or similar controls.

• Able to hold tight tolerances and work with minimal supervision.

• Good mathematics, including geometry and trigonometry.

• Flexible, a team player, and willing to learn new machines and processes.

• Physical stamina to handle heavy components.

• Able to understand and follow written and spoken English instructions.

• Multi-axis (4/5-axis) experience is an advantage, as is machining bronze and stainless steel.

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

• Minimum SMA/SMK (High School); Technical School or D3 in mechanical/manufacturing engineering preferred.
